By going from the Damaraland destinations to Etosha, leaving the far North (Kaokaland & Epupa Falls) for a next visit & ending your tour in Maun, shaving off 2 days returning to Windhoek, you can limit this tour to a good 3 weeks. Still, considering the distances involved, we recommend longer.
Day 1-3
From Windhoek into the Namib
Start in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, and head southwest into the Namib-Naukluft Desert, home to the iconic Sossusvlei dunes. Climb Big Daddy at sunrise, explore Deadvlei’s surreal white clay pan, and witness the shifting shadows over the towering orange dunes. Camping or lodge options allow you to experience the desert in style.
Day 4-6
Swakopmund & Atlantic Coast
Drive west to Swakopmund, Namibia’s adventure and coastal hub. Enjoy sandboarding, quad biking, or a scenic flight over the dunes. Venture to Sandwich Harbour, where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, and encounter seals, seabirds, and dramatic coastal landscapes.
Day 7-9
Damaraland
Head north into Damaraland, stopping at Spitzkoppe and Brandberg Mountain for dramatic rock formations and desert wildlife or the ancient Twyfelfontein rock engravings, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Palmwag Concession provides a private wilderness area where desert-adapted wildlife roams freely, while seasonal rivers and dry riverbeds create dramatic contrasts across the terrain. In this area we got some gems of campsites & lodges for you.
Day 10-12
Continue through Kaokoveld, a remote wilderness of rugged mountains and sparse villages. Visit Himba and Herero communities to gain insight into traditional life. Towards the Angolan border, culminate at Epupa Falls on the Kunene River. Camp next to the Falls or stay in lodges.
Day 13-16
Etosha National Park
Travel east to Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premier wildlife destination. Explore salt pans, waterholes, and diverse wildlife including elephants, lions, and rhinos. Game drives and photography opportunities abound, with the option to stay inside the park, both camping or lodging or just outside.
Etosha is very suited for self-driving, roads in the park are well-maintained.
Day 17-19
​Zambezi Region & into Botswana
From Etosha, head northeast into Namibia’s Zambezi Region. The riverine wilderness in this area is a haven for elephants, hippos, and abundant birdlife. Bwabwata you will pass through, Mudumu & the lush Nkasa Rupara are a bit further afield when time allows.
Cross into Botswana at Mohembo and follow the Okavango Panhandle south toward Maun. Spending a night along the river in one of a handful of mid- or upmarket lodges and campsites.
Don’t forget to pay a visit to the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that reveal thousands of ancient rock paintings. Guided walks here add cultural depth.
Day 20-23
Moremi & Khwai Mobile Safari
From Maun, embark on a mobile safari in Moremi Game Reserve or Khwai Community Concession. Witness abundant wildlife in intimate camps, explore channels by mokoro, and enjoy walking safaris in private concessions. The experience highlights the rhythm of the delta and the tranquillity of Botswana’s safari heartland.
Day 24-26
Return to Windhoek through the Kalahari
Return overland toward Windhoek, passing through Ghanzi, the Kalahari’s cattle and wildlife region and Gobabis, before ending in Windhoek. Reflect on your journey through deserts, rivers, and wilderness, and the diverse cultures of Namibia and Botswana.
Alternatively, you can end your journey in a lodge by the Thamalakane river in Maun.
