Khwai Community Concession

One of Botswana’s best destinations for a self-drive safari

The Khwai Community Concession is located in the far north-eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and is managed by the local Khwai community. Thanks to its strategic position between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, the area is exceptionally rich in wildlife, with large populations of elephants, buffalo and predators.

What truly sets Khwai apart are the safari activities that are permitted here but often not elsewhere, such as night game drives and guided walking safaris. These experiences add depth and intensity to your time in the bush. As a natural link between the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti region, Khwai is best explored on land, offering an authentic and adventurous safari experience.

Just outside the boundaries of Moremi, the real self-drive adventure begins. In this vast concession, you travel at your own pace. There are no fixed schedules — just you, your 4×4 vehicle and the wilderness. Whether you explore independently or with an experienced local guide, every sandy track invites discovery.

You follow wildlife trails along river channels where crocodiles lie motionless and hippos suddenly emerge from the reeds. Further on, the landscape shifts into dense woodland, alive with monkeys moving through the trees and birds announcing their presence. Every turn holds the promise of something special: a herd of elephants, a graceful kudu, the rare sable antelope — or, if luck is on your side, wild dogs or a lion resting quietly in the tall grass.
