Local Flavours
Food in Botswana and Namibia is generally familiar and accessible. In lodges, guesthouses and most restaurants you will find largely international cuisine with a Southern African influence, fresh salads, grilled fish, pasta dishes and hearty breakfasts. Nothing overly exotic, but consistently good and satisfying after a day outdoors.

One highlight is the outstanding quality of the meat. Both countries are known for excellent beef and game, often considered among the best in the world thanks to free-range farming and natural grazing. Expect superb steaks, venison, excellent oxtail and traditional braai (barbecue) dishes.

South African wines are widely available and of very good quality, with many lodges and restaurants offering excellent selections. For local flavours, try seswaa, Botswana’s national dish of slow-cooked shredded beef served with maize meal, as well as regional favourites like morogo (wild spinach), magwinya or vetkoek (fried bread) and biltong. In Namibia you may also encounter kapana (street-style grilled meat) and potjiekos, a slow-cooked stew prepared over the fire.
