Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

Endless horizons, ancient silence and one of Africa’s great migrations

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is unlike any other safari destination in Botswana. What was once a vast inland lake has evolved into an immense landscape of salt pans and open grasslands, stretching endlessly to the horizon. Covering more than 16,000 km², this is a place defined by scale, light and stillness — a striking contrast to the wetlands of the Okavango Delta.

At first glance, the pans may appear empty. In reality, they are full of life and unexpected experiences. During the dry season, the salt flats create an almost otherworldly setting, ideal for slow exploration and perspective-shifting moments. A quad bike excursion across the pans reveals the true magnitude of the landscape, where freedom and space take centre stage.

Makgadikgadi requires a deliberate approach to travel. The park is accessible only by 4×4, either as part of a self-drive safari for travellers with some off-road experience, or with the support of a local driver or guide. This limited accessibility enhances the sense of remoteness and ensures that the vastness of the pans remains largely untouched.

As the seasons change, Makgadikgadi comes alive. Following the rains, grasses return and wildlife follows. One of southern Africa’s most remarkable natural events unfolds here: the annual zebra migration. Thousands of zebras move across the plains in search of fresh grazing, closely followed by predators such as hyenas. It is a raw, dynamic spectacle witnessed by only a small number of travellers.

Beyond the dramatic scale, Makgadikgadi also offers intimate and unexpected encounters — including close interactions with habituated meerkats, curious, social and wonderfully expressive. These quieter moments provide a perfect counterbalance to the vastness of the environments.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is not about ticking off sightings. It is about space, rhythm and perspective. A destination that slows you down, sharpens your senses and reveals a completely different side of Botswana open, elemental and unforgettable.
