Khama Rhino Sanctuary

Conservation, open landscapes and powerful encounters

Khama Rhino Sanctuary is not a classic wildlife reserve, but a place where conservation and safari truly come together. Established in 1992 as a community-based project, the sanctuary was created with a clear purpose: to protect the endangered rhino, restore a degraded landscape, and create sustainable opportunities for local communities in Botswana.
Covering more than 8,500 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the reserve offers a wide, open landscape of grass plains, acacia woodland and natural waterholes. This calm and accessible environment is home to both white and black rhinos, alongside more than thirty other mammal species and a rich diversity of birdlife. Khama is widely regarded as one of the best places in Botswana to see both rhino species.
What truly sets Khama Rhino Sanctuary apart is the opportunity to join a guided rhino trekking experience. Accompanied by an experienced ranger, you set out first by vehicle and then on foot, following fresh tracks in the sand. Silence, focus and anticipation build with every step until you find yourself face to face with a rhino. Massive, vulnerable and remarkably close. An encounter that is not about spectacle, but about respect and awareness.
Khama Rhino Sanctuary is an ideal stopover on a self-drive journey or a gentle introduction to Botswana’s wildlife. Accessible, meaningful and quietly intense.
This is not a safari defined by large numbers or dramatic chases. It is Botswana at a human pace where every encounter matters and conservation becomes deeply tangible.
