Central Kalahari Game Reserve

Remote wilderness and raw beauty, especially during the green season.

Vast, silent and uncompromising, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of Botswana’s most powerful safari experiences. Covering an astonishing 52,800 km², it is the second-largest protected reserve in the world and easily the most remote in Southern Africa. This is not a place of easy sightings or busy game drives — it’s a place for travellers drawn to scale, solitude and authenticity.

Often described as semi-desert, the Central Kalahari reveals a surprisingly varied landscape of grasslands, savanna and scrub, intersected by ancient fossil riverbeds that hint at a wetter past. And that’s exactly why we love this area most during the green season. When the rains arrive, the Kalahari transforms. Fresh grasses carpet the plains, flowers bloom, and life returns in force.

Large herds of springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest move through the reserve, followed closely by predators. Black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah and brown hyena thrive here, perfectly adapted to this harsh environment. Giraffe, eland and hartebeest complete the picture, often set against dramatic skies that seem to stretch forever.

Due to its extreme remoteness, the Central Kalahari can only be explored on mobile safaris, by 4x4 tented self-drive, or through a handful of pristine, high-end lodges.

Drier Months...

In the drier months, the pans open up into vast, desolate spaces — a dream for photographers and stargazers alike. With almost no light pollution, nights here are unforgettable. Deception Valley, Piper Pan and Sunday Pan are iconic names in this wilderness, but the real highlight is the feeling itself: of being truly far from everything, in one of Africa’s last great wild places.
