Boteti River & West Makgadikgadi

Accessible wilderness, defined by contrast

In striking contrast to the lush Okavango, the Boteti River region and the western part of Makgadikgadi National Park reveal a very different side of Botswana. Drier, more open and raw — yet equally compelling. This area perfectly showcases the country’s remarkable landscape diversity. A welcome bonus: it is one of the most easily accessible safari destinations in Botswana.

Easily reached from Maun or from the south — for example via Khama Rhino Sanctuary — the Boteti region unfolds as a safari shaped by power and contrast. The Boteti River itself is not a permanent river; it flows in rhythm with the Okavango Delta and the Thamalakane River near Maun. At times still, at times full of life — always unpredictable.

When zebras and wildebeest follow their ancient migration routes, moving north to south and east to west, the landscape comes alive. During the dry season, tens of thousands of zebras gather along the Boteti’s banks. It is a natural spectacle that simply has to be experienced.

And where prey gathers, predators follow. Elephants move along the river and are often seen from remarkably close — sometimes even from your lodge or campsite, right on the water’s edge. Here, you are not merely visiting the wilderness — you become part of it.
